Round 12 Review
Take a look back at how the action unfolded in Round 12 of The Championship.
We look back at another rollercoaster round of action in The Championship, which saw wins for Cornish Pirates, Caldy, Hartpury, Ealing Trailfinders, and Bedford Blues, as well as a dramatic draw between Coventry and Jersey Reds.

Cornish Pirates kicked off the action against Nottingham under the Friday night lights, and made it back-to-back wins at The Mennaye. The Archers broke into an early lead via a John Neville penalty and a Liam Slatem drop goal, but Will Crane muscled over for the hosts just before the break to cut the half-time deficit to one point. Four minutes after the restart, Jordan Olowofela was shown a yellow card, and the Pirates capitalised seconds later when second half substitute Max Norey crashed over from a maul. Norey rumbled over for a second in the 66th minute, and Arwel Robson's conversion opened up an 11-point lead, which the Pirates saw out to clinch a sixth win of the season, and go four points ahead of their opponents in the table.
Caldy backed up last week's giant-killing performance win over Ealing Trailfinders with an impressive win against Richmond at Paton Field. A dominant opening salvo saw the hosts build up a 27-point lead inside 43 minutes, which Richmond were unable to overturn in the second half. Elliot Gourlay slotted the first points of the afternoon from the tee, and when Richmond went down to 14 men after Jake Monson was sin binned, Oliver Hearn barged over for the first try of the game. Nick Royle added a second in the 23rd minute, and Hearn bagged his brace just before the break. Gourlay added another three points two minutes after the restart, but when Chris Pilgrim was shown a yellow card for foul play, Richmond rallied and eventually got their first points on the board from a quick tap and go under the posts. Neither side was able to add to the scoreboard in the final quarter of the match, but Caldy will take plenty of heart from another eye-catching result, which sees them leapfrog Richmond into 9th place in The Championship.
After a minute's silence for former Coventry, England and British & Lions player, David Duckham, Coventry and Jersey Reds played out a 19-19 thriller in front of the cameras at Butts Park Arena, as the visitors astonishingly managed to overturn a 14-point deficit in the final four minutes of the game. While the closing stages of this 2nd vs 3rd clash were full of drama, 35 minutes had passed before the first points of the game, when Jersey broke down the left flank, cut back inside and Ben Wollett stretched over to give the visitors a five-point lead at the break. Coventry started the second half brightly and crossed twice in quick succession through Tom Dodd and Josh Bainbridge, and when captain Jordon Poole sprinted over in the 72nd minute, and Pat Pellegrini converted, it looked like the hosts had all but sealed victory. Jersey clearly didn't get that memo though, and, to the near disbelief of the raucous Coventry faithful packed inside Butts Park Arena, the visitors bagged two seven pointers in the final seconds of the match, through Tim Grey from a 5-metre scrum and a penalty try moments later. The result means it's 'as you were' at the top of the table, with eight points separating Coventry and Jersey Reds, in 3rd and 2nd respectively.
Hartpury continued their fine form of late with a victory against Doncaster Knights at Castle Park. Sam Smith darted over for the visitors after less than two minutes, with the only other scores of the first half coming through the boots of Alex Dolly and Tom Mathews, who traded penalties on the half hour mark. Leading by seven at the break, Matty Jones scored Hartpury's second in the 47th minute, but the Knights responded in the 61st minute with a George Simpson score. Heading into the final 10 minutes of the game, Mathews slotted another three points from the tee, before full back Jacob Morris sealed the win with a try in the 76th minute. Hartpury now have the longest winning streak in The Championship, with an impressive five straight wins on the bounce.
Ampthill pushed Ealing Trailfinders all the way in West London on Saturday afternoon, but the league leaders rallied late on to get back to winning ways and open up a five-point gap at the top of the table. Ampthill No. 8, Morgan Strong, crashed over for an early brace, either side of a Jonah Holmes try, but the hosts took a two-point lead into the interval after referee Andrew Jackson awarded the Trailfinders a penalty try in the 38th minute. Conor Rankin restored Ampthill's lead with a try three minutes after the restart, but again Ealing wasted no time in responding, this time through a Jan Campher and Craig Hampson double. Josh Smart reduced the deficit to four points with a bonus-point try in the 64th minute, but when Ampthill went down to 13 men after Tom Hardwick and Josh Bragman were shown yellow cards, and Ealing were awarded a second penalty try in the 74th minute, the result was all but confirmed. The Mob, though, will take plenty of solace from pushing the title favourites all the way and securing a well-earned bonus point, as attention now turns to another tough assignment: Coventry at home next Saturday.
London Scottish remain rooted to the foot of the table after Bedford Blues posted a 21-point win against The Exiles at the RAG. Hayden Hyde scored for the second game in a row after 10 minutes for Scottish, but a Will Maisey penalty and a converted Tom Lockett try gave the Blues a three-point lead at the half-hour mark. Nathan Chamberlain then slotted two penalties for the hosts, but the final word of the half went to the Blues, with Maisey darting over for his second, before converting his own try on the stroke of half time. London Scottish were unable to register on the scoreboard in the second 40, while the visitors added three more through Jack Hughes, Michael Le Bourgeois, and Tom Litchfield. The bonus-point win sees fourth-placed Bedford Blues close the gap on third-placed Coventry to six points, while London Scottish now trail 11th-placed Ampthill by eight points.
